Rita M. Bottei, 79, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 12:40 a.m. Monday, September 10, 2012 at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation, South Bend.
She was born on August 13, 1933 to the late Matthew E. and Bernice (Rutkowski) Uznanski in Chicago, IL, and has lived in South Bend since 1960, coming from Davenport, IA. Along with her parents; one brother, Kenneth M. Uznanski also preceded her in death.
On August 13, 1960, as Rita M. Uznanski, she married Rudolph S. "Rudy" Bottei in Chicago, IL, who was a professor of Chemistry at the University of Notre Dame. He died on April 23, 2003.
Mrs. Bottei was a Professor of Chemistry at St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA; St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, IN; and Indiana University South Bend. She received a Bachelor Degree from the former Rosary College (Currently Dominican University) in River Forest, IL. Rita then went on to receive both her Master's Degree and PhD from the University of Illinois in Champagne, IL. She later received a Master of Science in Administration Degree from the University of Notre Dame during the 1980's.
She is survived by her daughter, Roberta A. Bottei of South Bend, IN; three sons, Gregory M. Bottei, M.D. of Green Bay, WI; Paul R. (Theresa) Bottei of Nashville, TN; Edward M. (Deana) Bottei, M.D. of Sioux City, IA; five grandchildren, Maria Theresa Bottei, Michael Bottei, and John Bottei, all of Nashville, TN; Brian Bottei and Laura Bottei, both of Green Bay, WI; one step granddaughter, Sadie Engel of Sioux City, IA; and two sisters-in-law, Joan Uznanski of St. Paul, MN and Margaret Bottei of Hackettstown, NJ.
Rita was a member of Christ the King Parish and Potawatomi Kiwanis Club, where she served as the Secretary. She served as the Past President of the Women's Art League; Past President of University Civitan; and was a long-time volunteer for Senior Health Insurance Information Program (S.H.I.I.P.).
Brilliant and faithful, Rita loved her husband and children, adored her grandchildren, and was a devoted friend to many.
Visitation will be from 3-5 & 6-8 p.m. Friday, September 14, 2012 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN.
