Gaylord N. Toll, 85, of South Bend and a former resident of Garrett, Lakeville, Mentone and North Webster passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013 at RiverCrest Specialty Hospital in Mishawaka.

He was born in Muncie, Indiana on March 4, 1928 to Frank and Opal (McLelland) Toll. On July 28, 1951, he married the love of his life, Flonnie (Beaty) Toll.

Gaylord liked to say that he had retired three times. Most recently he retired as the founding Executive Director of the Freedom Academy, an innovative adult education provider that serves Northeast Indiana. He also retired from a 35 year career in secondary education; first as a mathematics teacher and then as Principal at North Webster High School, Mentone High School, LaVille Jr.-Sr. High School, and Garrett High School. His first retirement was in 1982 from the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserve where he enjoyed a 31 year career and achieved the Rank of Colonel. He served as Commandant of the 4160th USAR School from 1978-1981. Following retirement, Colonel Toll proudly wore his uniform as he participated in dozens of Veterans Day and Memorial Day Services.

Gaylord held a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Ball State University, where he was a member of the school's first Men's Volleyball Team, and an Master of Science Degree Educational Administration from Indiana University. He completed additional post-graduate work at Indiana University and Purdue University. During his military career he completed Infantry Basic Officer Course in 1952, Ordinance Officer Basic Course in 1957, Ordinance Officer Advanced Course in 1960, Command and General Staff College in 1967 and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1973.

Always an active community member wherever he and Flonnie resided, he served on the Boards of DeKalb Memorial Hospital, Garrett Public Library, Alliance Industries, Garrett-Keyser-Butler Vocational Building Trades, DeKalb County Community Foundation, and The Freedom Academy. He was an active member of the Dekko Foundation Grants Review Committee. Gaylord was a 58-year member of Lions International and Past District Governor of District 25-G. He was an active member of the Lydick Lions Club. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Lakeville Masonic Lodge.

Gaylord loved the Lord and served many United Methodist congregations as a board member, bible study leader and Sunday school teacher. He truly enjoyed singing and was a valued member of many church choirs. Most recently, he and Flonnie were active in the Northwest United Methodist Church of South Bend.

In addition to all this he was an untangler of fishing lines, a driver of station wagons, a feller and flocker of Christmas trees, an encourager of aspirations, a grower of vegetables, a striker of magnificent golf shots, a regaler of fine dining events, and the best husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, relative, friend and mentor that anyone could hope for in this world.

Gaylord is survived by his wife Flonnie; four children, Tom (Kay) of Hillsborough, New Jersey, Ron of South Bend, Becky (Terry) Holzwart of South Bend, and Barbara (Dr. Stephen) Zucker of South Bend; seven grandchildren Maegan (Douglas) Hawkins of LaPorte, Tyler (Faith) Toll of Naples, Florida, Landon (Kristina) Toll of Indianapolis, Whitney Toll of Indianapolis, Trevor Toll of Indianapolis, Gretchen (A. J.) Summe of Elkhart, and Caleb Holzwart of Bremen; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Thursday May 23, 2013 in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. Funeral services for Gaylord will be held at 11 am Friday May 24, 2013 in Northwest United Methodist Church, 21855 Brick Road, South Bend. Burial will take place at Union Cemetery in Eaton Indiana at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Northwest United Methodist Church, the Lydick Lions Club, Warren Township EMS or the charity of the donor's choice.
