"Thanks be to God for this inexpressible gift!" (II Cor. 9:15) Such were the sentiments of Sister Rita Murphy (a.k.a. Sister Anita) throughout her life as she reflected on her vocation and ministry as a Sister of the Holy Cross for over 70 years. Sister Rita died at age 90 during the last hour of Thanksgiving Day in Saint Mary's Convent.
For 24 years she was first a teacher of elementary and junior high youth in several eastern states and in Texas. A call to pastoral care then led her to training as a chaplain and serving 37 years in hospitals in Utah, Idaho, and California. Significantly, the first and last years of Sister Rita's ministry of healing prayer and presence were at Saint Joseph Hospital in South Bend, Indiana. It was there Sister was complimented because, "She prays like a Baptist!
Catholic services will be held in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto on Thursday December 1. The reception of the body and wake will be at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at 1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556 or online at www.cscsisters.org where you can also read more about Sister.
