Mark Tyler Mayfield passed away on Monday, January 23, 2017, at age 17 in LaPorte Hospital. He was born on April 7, 1999 in South Bend, Indiana to parents Mike and Diane Mayfield. He attended New Prairie High School and was set to graduate this June.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Eugene Carrico. Mark is survived by his parents, Mike and Diane of South Bend; brothers, Derrick (Erin) of Ankeny, IA, Brent of Cincinnati, OH, Ryan of Portland, OR, Peter of South Bend; sisters, Jill, Jena, and Brooke of South Bend; nephew, Grant and niece, Sloane of Ankeny, IA. He leaves his maternal grandmother, Joan Carrico of Mishawaka, and paternal grandparents, Calvis and Adrienne Mayfield of New Carlisle, as well as many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and his dog Jovie. He also leaves behind his girlfriend, Bree Delio whom he dearly cherished.
From a young age, Mark displayed an avid talent for sports, especially baseball. Mark was a passionate Cub's fan, even attending the 2016 World Series parade celebration in Chicago. Recently, he expressed an interest in video game design and programming, and planned to study computer technology at university in fall of 2017. Mark had a sweet and quiet kindness about him that was best expressed through his infectious smile. He always went with his gut and followed through with what he thought was right. He was a beautiful son, wonderful brother, and beloved uncle. Mark was a friend to many, whether in the classroom, in his job at Jimmy John's, or on the baseball field. He was taken far too soon and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A vigil will be held at New Prairie High School on January 26, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. CT (7:00 p.m. ET). Visitation will be held on January 27, 2017, from 2:00-8:00 p.m. ET at Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 S. Mayflower Rd., South Bend, where a rosary will prayed at 5:00 p.m. The family encourages visitors to wear Chicago Cubs gear in Mark's memory. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. ET at Holy Family Catholic Church. Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
